On May 21, 2019, Marcus Otis (Marc) Waugh passed peacefully in his apartment at Porter Hills Village in Grand Rapids.

Born Dec. 15, 1932, the only son of Ruth E. and Lloyd H. Waugh, Marc was a lifelong resident of Saugatuck until the passing of his wife Lynn Nadine Waugh (Resignol) on Nov. 9, 2009. They were married 49 years and resided at 346 Griffith St., from 1964 until Lynn’s death.

Marc was born in the Saugatuck-Douglas hospital that now houses the Kirby hotel and restaurant. Marc attended Saugatuck Public Schools and was a member of the Graduating Class of 1951. He attended Western Michigan University for two years before being inducted into the United States Army in January 1954.

Beginning in 1956, Marc ran and operated Culligan Water Conditioning and was affectionately known as “the Culligan Man,” which resulted in many a prank call to the home where he and Lynn maintained their office. Marc and Lynn successfully ran the business until their retirement in May 1997.

Marc was active in the community serving as a member of the Saugatuck Volunteer Fire Department, the Saugatuck Lions Club and on the Saugatuck Township Board of Trustees.

Marc was an avid sportsman, spending many a weekend and holiday fishing and hunting in northern Michigan…annual deer camp in Fife Lake, Michigan with an assortment of Saugatuck luminaries (Harry Newnham and Herm Herner to name just two), frequent trips to Baldwin and parts nearby to fly fish on the Baldwin and Pere Marquette rivers (which he frequented as a young man with his father), and an annual ducking hunting float down the Rabbit River with his long time pal Jack Olson.

Following Lynn’s death, Marc resided at Porter Hills Village. He enjoyed weekly dinners and long weekend drives with son Steve, and in the summer months many visits to 5/3 Ballpark to enjoy the Whitecaps and a cold Bud Light.

Marc was proceeded in death by his mother Ruth Bundy Waugh and his father Lloyd Hall Waugh. Ruth is remembered for her service as the Kindergarten teacher in Saugatuck Public Schools from 1928 until her retirement in 1966. Lloyd is remembered as “Doc Waugh,” having served as Superintendent of Saugatuck Public Schools from 1928 until his passing in 1955.

Marc is survived by his son Steven Marc Waugh of Holland; two grandchildren, Ellen Marie Waugh of Chicago, Ill., and Patrick Lloyd Waugh of Grand Rapids; and cousin Van Waugh and his wife Lynn Waugh (Van Pelt) of Owosso.

The family wishes to thank the many nurses and staff at Porter Hills Village for the many years of kind care they provided to Marc.

Details concerning the celebration of Marc’s life will be announced at a later date. For more information, please visit dykstrafuneralhome.com.

Thomas John Steel, 87, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2019, in Grand Rapids. He was born in Grand Rapids on June 15, 1931, to Thomas A. and Dorothy Cowin Steel.

Tom graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1949, and Michigan State University in 1954. At MSU, he met the love of his life, Margaret Ann Schank, and they married in 1955.

Tom served as 1st Lt. in the United States Air Force stationed in Harlingen, Texas, where they spent their first married years. Moving back to the Midwest, Tom worked for more than 30 years in the commercial mortgage banking field, primarily in Chicago. He held the prestigious MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute and was a past president of the Illinois chapter.

In 1992, Tom and Margaret moved to their dream home on the shore of Lake Michigan near Saugatuck. Tom worked as a commercial real estate appraiser over the next 19 years. Shortly following his retirement in 2011, they moved back to his hometown of Grand Rapids.

Tom was a considerate and universally liked person who exhibited a genuine interest in others. He was committed to his family, friends, and community. As an Eagle Scout himself, he remained active in the Boy Scouts of America, chaperoning his son’s canoeing and camping trips.

He made many lasting friendships throughout his life, including his Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity brothers, his many tennis and golfing buddies, the multitude of relationships he developed in his professional life, and his neighbors in the lakeshore and Quail Crest communities.

He enjoyed sports, both as a competitor and spectator, and was a die hard Spartan fan. After a nail biting MSU victory, Tom was known to say that there was “never a doubt” about the outcome of the game.

Tom loved his special relationships with his children and grandchildren. He invested the time to genuinely know and appreciate each of them and remained consistently engaged in their lives. He made it a point to visit all of his grandchildren at their respective colleges.

Tom and Margaret loved nothing more than to host family and friends at their home. Tom especially enjoyed spending time at the lakeshore with these special people...grilling, entertaining, swimming, riding the John Deere and enjoying a Scotch and cigar on the deck.

Tom was preceded in death by Margaret, his loving wife and best friend of 59 years, and survived by his three children, Shelley (Ron) Mishler of Grand Rapids; Kathryn (Jeff) Sangalis of Dallas, Texas; and Tom Steel Jr. of Glenn; six grandchildren, John Mishler of Houston, Texas; Jennifer (Rich) Tompkins of Houston, Texas; Megan (Christopher) Myers of Ames, Iowa; Emily (Matthew) Senchuk of Houston, Texas; Ellen Mishler of Dallas, Texas; and Christine (Ricky) Perusquia of New York, N.Y.; and three great-grandchildren, Marcela Steel Myers, Holly Dolores Myers and Owen Christopher Tompkins. He is also survived by his sister, Laura Steel Page of DuPont, Wash.; his niece Carolyn; and nephew Tom.

Though all will greatly miss their dad, G-dad, great G-dad, uncle, and friend, there is great comfort in knowing that Tom has been reunited with his wife and is forever at home with his savior Jesus Christ.

Family will receive friends at a visitation on Sunday, June 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service, 4291 Cascade Road SE, Grand Rapids. A memorial service and celebration of Tom’s life will take place on Tuesday, June 24, at 11 a.m.  at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2700 Fulton St. SE, Grand Rapids. Larry worked construction for Heckmans, hauled gravel for Pickett and Belden Sand & Gravel, was a welder and a horseshoer but spent the majority of his life in the saddle racing and training horses.  Larry followed in his Dad’s footsteps and has now passed his knowledge and love of horses onto the third generation; his daughter Tiffany.

Larry loved his life; he loved people, loved his family and farm and would do anything for anyone to help them out. His legacy will live on through his family and friends.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be Saturday, July 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Belden farm 2316 Lincoln Road, Allegan. Bring a beverage, chair and we will hope to see you there. Any questions, please contact Michelle Harris at mcmroost@gmail.com or 269-217-5971.
