Betty Klage, 90

Betty Klage, retired Douglas business owner and Herman Miller legal assistant, died in Saugatuck on May 14, 2019, at the age of 90.

After graduating from Thorton Fractional High School in Calumet City, Ill., Betty married her high school sweetheart Bill. Following a tour as Navy wife, she raised five children in Munster, Ind.

Betty and Bill instilled in their children a love for outdoor activities including camping, boating around Lake Michigan and skiing the mountains of Colorado.

After moving to the Saugatuck area, they owned and operated Lakeview Lanes.

Betty had an incredible zest for life and was well known for frequently breaking into song. After moving to Stuart, Fla., she continued to perform and sing at the local recreation center.

Elizabeth Marie Klage (Betty) was born in Calumet, City, Ill. to Sigmund Oakes and Marie Dembrowski on April 26, 1929. She was proceeded in death by her only sister Joan and her husband William.

Her survivors include daughters, Kathleen Klage and Karen Steiger of Saugatuck; sons, William Klage Jr. of Hobe Sound, Fla., Thomas Klage of Bakersfield, Fla., and Christopher Klage of Pelston; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Being a proud Polish Catholic, Betty will be remembered at a funeral mass on Friday, May 24, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, 100 St. Peter Drive in Douglas, MI.

Branden Hunter Morris, 16

Branden Hunter Morris, 16, of Pullman, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2019, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

He was born Feb. 10, 2003, in Holland, to Stacy Gentry and Charles “Chuck” Morris.  Branden was in the ninth grade at Fennville High School. He loved BMX biking, Play Station 4 and rap music. Branden liked being outdoors, especially fishing. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Chuck Morris who died in 2007.

Surviving are his mother, Stacy Gentry of Pullman; sisters, Erika (fiancé Morgan Bolles) Gentry of Fennville and Trisha Morris of Georgia; brothers, Charles Morris III of Jonesboro, Mo., and Jonathan (Andrea) Guthrie of Grand Junction; grandparents, Faye and Charles Morris of New England, Ark. and Carolyn Holtsclaw of Pullman.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Filbrandt Family Funeral Home in South Haven. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 22, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Mr. Robert Norwood officiating.

Branden will be laid to rest at Lee Township Cemetery.

Cynthia Kollen, 93, of Saugatuck, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2019.

Cynthia was born May 9, 1926, in Zeeland to Jacob and Margaretha Van Dorp. She graduated from Zeeland High School and on Sept. 19, 1953, she married Benjamin Kollen. 

Ben and Cindy opened Country Store Antiques in Saugatuck in 1953 and the Kollen family still owns their store 66 years later. 

In 2009, Ben preceded her in death. 

Cindy was a lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church of Zeeland.

She is survived by her daughter, Margo Kollen of Gobles; her son, Bentley and Anne Kollen (Morgan, Jonathan, Nathan, Ethan) of Zeeland; her son, Carlton and Rachael Kollen (Andrew, Christine and fiancé Nate De Zwaan, Elizabeth) of Holland; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 31, at 11 a.m., at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State St., Zeeland. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 30, also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Zeeland Cemetery.

Roger was born Feb. 5, 1936, in Allegan and had lived in the Bloomingdale area the last 30 years.

Ronda Sue Robinson, 55, of Hamilton passed away Saturday, May 25, 2019, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Born Dec. 16, 1963, in Douglas, she was the daughter of the late Clayton and Carol (Hildebrandt) Myers and the late Paul Butler and was the wife of Frederic “Fred” George Robinson.

She worked as a realtor for many years and was the former owner of two jewelry stores, Dreams of Gold in Saugatuck and Allegan. In her spare time she enjoyed shopping, experiences and adventures with her family, grandchildren and friends.

She battled a lot of sicknesses and triumphs and she went peacefully to be with our Lord.

In addition to her husband of 12 years, Fred, Ronda is survived by her children, Ashley (John) Burmeister and Mallory (Mitchael) Blacksten; siblings, Gail Munn, Bruce Myers, Linda (Roger) Latham, Brian (Lucia) Myers and Karla Schackow; grandchildren, Kylee Burmeister, Makenzie Burmeister, McKinley Blacksten and Maverick Blacksten; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Christ Community Church on Thursday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at which time a funeral service will begin and a luncheon will follow. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Kathleen Ann Kibby, 72

Kathleen Ann Kibby (Havaich), 72, of Allegan passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at the Wings Home in Allegan.

Born Sept. 29, 1946, in Milwaukee, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Katherine (Furjanich) Havaich and was the wife of the late Ivan Harry Kibby. 

Shortly following her high school graduation and at the young age of 17, Kathleen left home to go to work in Washington, D.C. for the Department of Defense as a secretary specializing in shorthand. She continued her work for the government for many years. 

Kathleen later went to work as a salesperson for Discovery Toys. She loved meeting new people and sharing her love of these toys with them for more than 34 years and right up to her final days. 

Kathleen loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with all her heart and shared her love with everyone she came in contact with. 

Kathleen is survived by her children, Martin J. (April) Billman, David A. (Kimberly) Billman, Ronald J. Billman and John M. Billman; stepchildren, Ivan H. “Charlie” Kibby II and Bud M. (Suzanne) Kibby; sister Anne Marie Bartz; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Along with her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter Paula Jane Billman; her stepdaughter Catherine Leigh Wright; and her brother Matthew Havaich.

The family will receive friends at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, on Thursday, May 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday, May 31, at At the Master’s Feet Discipleship Ministry from 10 to 11 a.m. A funeral service will follow at the church at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Cemetery at 3 p.m.

Guadalupe Barajas Callejas, 85

Guadalupe Barajas Callejas passed away peacefully on May 25, 2019, surrounded by his family. He was 85 years old. Guadalupe was a good father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, son, brother and friend, especially to those in need.

Guadalupe was born in Dec. 12, 1933, in Edcouch, Texas, to the late Epifanio Artemio Callejas and Guadalupe Barajas. He was raised in Villagran, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Guadalupe was a hard worker, who loved to sing, garden and attend family events.

He is survived by his former wife Juanita Robles Callejas and his children, Esther (Mark) Fifelski, Esteban (Melissa) Callejas, Roberto (Maris) Callejas, Nicomedes Callejas, Guadalupe Callejas, Naomi (Dave) Muyskens, Minerva Breeding (Jeremy), and Samuel Callejas (Marcia); 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother Fernando Callejas, his sister Maria Guadalupe Callejas Andrade and his partner, Catherine Reichel.

Guadalupe was preceded in death by his siblings, Sequndo, Artemio, Gloria C. Mosqueda, Simona C. Lopez, Josefina, Lalo, Jose, Trinidad, Ramona and Martin Callejas.

The funeral will be at San Felipe Catholic Church in Pearl. There will be a public visitation at Chappell Funeral Home in Fennville on Friday, May 31, from 4 to 6:15 p.m., with the rosary beginning at 6:15 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at San Felipe Catholic Church with the Father Fabio Garzon, V.F, Pastor in Solidum officiating. Interment will follow at Pearl Cemetery.

David Lee Jacobson, 60

David Lee Jacobson, 60, of Otsego passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at Rose Arbor Hospice.

He was born Oct. 10, 1958, in Kalamazoo, to Otto and Nancy Jacobson.

Dave loved the simple pleasures in life; chatting with family and friends, snacking on his favorite foods, watching old Westerns, and building puzzles.

Dave had the biggest heart and he will be missed deeply by all who know him.

He is survived by his mother Nancy; brothers, Gary and Jerry; sister, Lynn and her husband Ron; nieces, Karmin and Terri; and nephew Kalvin.

According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A service will be at a later date.

John 'Jack' R. Nash, 84

John “Jack” R. Nash, 84, passed away in his home, surrounded by family, on May 31, 2019, at 2:55 p.m.

Jack was born on Oct. 5, 1934, in Allegan, to Barbara Maxine Nash. He married Carolyn “Susie” (Walker) Nash on Oct.27, 1967, in Fennville.

Jack is survived by his son Josh Nash of Mishawaka, Ind. and three daughters, Tonya Nash of Vicksburg, Kelly (Loren) Fairbotham of Mishawaka, Ind., and Challice (David) Dixon of Grand Rapids. Also surviving are his eight grandchildren, Jordan Nash of San Francisco, Calif., Chandler Nash of Shelby Township, Joseph (Derrick) Fairbotham of Elkhart, Ind., Austin Dixon of Chicago, Ill., Landan Nash of Rochester, Jesse Fairbotham of Mishawaka, Ind., Arianna Dixon of Santiago, Spain and Connor Nash of Shelby Township; and one great-grandchild Kavon Fairbotham of Elkhart, Ind.

Jack was a graduate of Allegan High School and Albion College. Jack courageously served in the United States Army for two years after graduating. He retired from Rockwell International after 35 years of service in 1989. Jack enjoyed golf, but his greatest love was harness racing and his horses. He was a member of the Michigan Harness Horsemen Association.

Visitation for Jack will be on Friday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. Directly following are services from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. The family would like to invite visitors to a celebration of life at “The Silo” at The Grill House at 1 p.m.

Barbara Roxbury, 81

Barbara Roxbury, 81, of Hopkins passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at her home. Born July 1, 1937, in Holland, she was the daughter of the late Harry Raymond and Florence (VanderMeulen) Beekman and devoted wife of Thomas Lee Roxbury.

Barbara was a member of Hopkins Community Reformed Church. She owned and operated Grandma Barb’s Daycare where she especially loved spoiling the babies.

Barb was very interested in genealogy and traced her family tree through Scotland and the Netherlands. At home, she loved to watch the hummingbirds, orioles, and occasional woodpecker from her window.

With a quick wit and loving heart, Barbara loved cracking jokes, giving instructions to her husband, and hugs and kisses to her kids and grandkids.

Barbara is survived by her husband Tom of over 50 years; her brother Harry Beekman Jr.; and siblings-in-law, James Roxbury, Daniel Roxbury, Joann Roxbury, Mary Jane Wright, Michael Roxbury, Sally Bauer, and Neal Patrick Roxbury.

Her spirit is carried on by her children, Robert Wright, Robin Lyles, Kolleen Livingston and Thomas (Ryan) Roxbury; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers-in-law, Terry Roxbury and Dennis Roxbury.

A visitation will be Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. until Noon at Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel. A private burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Carol Joyce DeMull, 91

On Wednesday, May 29, 2019, Carol Joyce DeMull passed away.

She was born on April 26,1928, in Chicago, Ill., to Daniel and Nella Elston (Kammeraad). She attended Hope College, married and raised a family.

Returning to work, she became a respiratory therapist and worked for many years at Metro Hospital, a job she truly enjoyed. 

Carol was an accomplished seamstress, loved to shop, and had a deep Christian faith. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Ross DeMull, Jackie Myers and Joan DeMull; grandchildren, Rachel, Matthew, Nathan, Leah; and five great-grandchildren.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; son in law Millard “Butch” Myers; and great-grandchild Brady Hill.

In accordance with her wishes, private interment has taken place in Hudson Corners Cemetery.

Robert Lee Thomas Sr., 80

Robert Lee Thomas Sr., 80, of Allegan passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family.

Born July 3, 1938, in Allegan, he was the son of the late Earl and Leva (Frederick) Thomas and was the husband of Christine (Markoski) Thomas.

Mr. Thomas joined the United States Marine Corps in 1955. He was honorably discharged in 1961, as a Lance Corporal.

Mr. Thomas had worked for various companies and in many capacities including at Brunswick, TruHeat, ElectroHeat, Rockwell, Thomas Associates and Haworth. His greatest joy; however, came from his work as Chaplain at the Allegan County Jail where he was often lovingly referred to as “Chap.”

Mr. Thomas was a member of Monterey Center United Methodist Church where he had served as President of the Advisory Board and was instrumental in beginning the adult Sunday school class, which he oversaw for 27 years. He had also served as President of the Allegan JayCees.

In his spare time, Mr. Thomas enjoyed spending time on his computer.

In addition to his wife Christine of 25 years, he is survived by his children, Robert Lee (Christina) Thomas Jr., Brenda (Curtis) Andrews, Michelle Thomas (Donna), Brad (Monique) Brenner and Brenda Brenner (Talia Capelj); siblings, James (Phyllis) Thomas, Earleen (John) Barber and Lyle (Mona) Thomas; grandchildren, Jack Lautenschleger, Amber VanHouten, Sarah Lautenschleger, Shay Thomas, Kaden Thomas, Elise Mack, Rebecca Mack, Jenna Brenner, Taylor Brenner and Brittany Coburn; great-grandchildren, Zack, Emma, Lexie, Logan, Mason, Ethan, Ariana-Janaea, Kenna, Voltar, Shay Jr., Mila and Rylee; and many nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Caryal (Gains) Thomas; son Jimmy Thomas; and his brother Charles William Thomas.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. A funeral service will take place Thursday, June 6, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with visitation one-hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Poplar Hill Cemetery with military honors by the United States Marine Corps and the Otsego VFW Post 3030.

Martha E. Snyder, 95

Martha E. Snyder, 95, of Allegan passed away Monday, May 27, 2019, with family by her side at Ely Manor Nursing Home.

She was born on March 30, 1924, in Chester, W.Va., to the late Fred W. and Pearl (Mellot) McGaffick. 

She is survived by one son, Fred D. (Doug) Snyder, 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was married to William (Bill) Snyder in the Presbyterian Church of Kalamazoo on May 7, 1955. William (Bill) passed away Feb. 28, 1989, in Baton Rogue, La.  She was preceded in death by three children, M. Sue Walters of Kalamazoo; Larry (Bud) Snyder of Gobles; Margaret (Peggy) Marino of Monroe, La.; and one infant granddaughter, Jessica Hernandez of Tulsa, Okla.

Martha was a lifelong follower of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She relied heavily on her faith in God. She shared her spiritual gifts of hospitality and caregiving with family, friends and those she met along life’s journey. 

She had the opportunity to hold many different jobs in her lifetime. She worked as a laborer, foster parent, in secretarial positions, retail jewelry sales, and long-term care of the sick and elderly.

Cremation has taken place and her remains will be interred at a later date.  She will be laid to rest beside her husband, William (Bill) Snyder in the Port Hudson National Cemetery, Baton Rogue, La.

There will be a Celebration of Life in her honor on Saturday, June 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Alamo Township Hall, 7901 North 6th St., Kalamazoo, MI 49009. A light lunch will be provided.

Duane Francis Schraeder, 79

Duane Francis Schraeder, 79, of Butler Township passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at Promedica Coldwater Regional Hospital, unexpectedly, from natural causes.

In keeping with his wishes, Duane has been cremated and a service will be Saturday, June 29, at 11 a.m. at Oasis of Love Family Church in Coldwater with Pastor Harold Jewell officiating.

Duane was born July 17, 1939, to Carl and Edith (Loew) Schraeder in Hopkins, where he grew up, attended school and the St. Paul Lutheran Church. He moved to Branch County in the 1980s and was married to Carolyn Hyatt, who preceded him in death in 2009.

On May 18, 2018, he married Connie (Odisher) Ferris, who survives.

Through the years, Duane attended the Oasis of Love Church and the Christian Pilgrim Church, both in Coldwater. He retired through the Operating Engineers local #324 as a crane operator and worked on several construction job sites throughout the state; his employment took him as far as the Alaskan pipeline.

Closer to home, he worked as a mechanic for an International Harvester dealership and Ken Schraeder Wrecker Service. Duane owned and operated a small welding business and built many utility trailers. In his free time he liked to go fishing and to tractor shows.

In addition to his wife Connie, Duane is survived by his children, Duane E. Schraeder of Middleville and Teresa (Carl) Lins of Middleville; his step-children, Lori (Guy) Uncle, Doug McClellan, Cheryl McClellan, Allen McClellan, Wes McClellan and Tami (Kurt) Howe; his grandchildren, Austin Schraeder, Steve Hall, Brad Hall, Keli Hoffman, Kami Uncle and Austin, Lance and Nate McClellan; great-grandchildren, Graysen and Emersyn Hall; brothers, and Ken Schraeder and Dale Schraeder of Hopkins.

He was best friends with Scott Locke, Lance Wiser, and Glen Raymond.

Duane was preceded in death by wife Carolyn Schraeder, his parents, and a sister Joyce Earl.

Matthew Morgan Montgomery, 42

Matthew Morgan Montgomery, 42, of Allegan passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019.  Born March 1, 1977, in Marcum, Ill., he was the son of Sharon (Kocsis) Montgomery and the late Kenneth Ray Montgomery. 

Matthew had worked for a variety of employers throughout his adult life but had most recently enjoyed his employment with Ropes Courses in Allegan. He loved to work on cars, lawnmowers and practically anything else with an engine. He was especially proud of the Cj5 Red Jeep that he built.

Matthew was a devoted father and a dedicated uncle who helped to raise his niece and nephews. His family was the most important thing in the world to him, even ranking higher than his chocolate milk and Tums addictions.

In addition to his mother Sharon, Matthew is survived by his children, Trevor Matthew Montgomery (Jenell Slater), Carter Joseph Montgomery and Tinliegh Ryan Montgomery and their mother Ashley Priebe, and Jayden Kenneth Montgomery and his mother Kimberly Baux; a brother Jeffrey Alan Montgomery; a sister Lori R. Montgomery; a brother-in-law York Renton; nieces and nephews, Tangela M. Ferris, Adrian Ferris, Spencer Ferris, Amanda Zeran and Kasondra Renton; a great-niece Ariana Piner; and a great-nephew TJ Piner.  Along with his father, he was preceded in death by his brother Joseph Montgomery and his sister Kelly Montgomery.

The family will receive friends at Gorden Funeral Residence on Monday, June 10, from 3 to 4 p.m., at which time a funeral service will begin.

Evonna “Bonnie” Beard, 80, of Dorr went to be with the Lord, Saturday, May 25, 2019. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton “Bud” and Sylvia Brenner, and her infant brother Darl.

She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Otto “Sonny” Beard; her children, Ronda (Kevin) Gilbert and Scott (Heidi) Beard; grandchildren, Jessica (Cody) Milburn, Kristin (Tyler) VanderSyde, Mitchell (Becca) Gregory and Clayton Beard; brother Clayton “Shorty” Brenner; sisters-in-law, Marie VanKlompenberg and Margaret (Ron) Priest; brother-in-law Wendell (Sandy) Beard; and extended family and many close friends.

Bonnie will be remembered as the friendly face and voice of Beard’s Produce where she worked for many years with her husband and family.

Funeral services were Wednesday, May 29, at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home, 4330 18th St., Dorr, with Pastors Craig Van Beek and Comer Skinner officiating.

In loving memory of William “Berdoo Blue” Lawson. He was born William Joseph Lawson on April 26, 1959, in Dayton, Ohio.

He loved motorcycles, hunting, fishing, everything outdoors and mostly his family. He was a caring, righteous and loyal man that will be missed terribly by many. 

“The cancer got him” and ended his suffering on June 3, 2019.

Surviving family members are sister, Barbara Benson and family; his wife of over 30 years Shaun Lawson; son Blue Lawson; daughter Martha Gibson; grandchildren, Brooklynn Christine Reed, Charlie Nichols, Amber and William Gibson, Makayla, Jordan, Jacob and Leah. 

Family members also include his aunts, uncles, cousins, chosen family, friends and his service dog Batman.

Janet L. Hettinger, 81, of Allegan passed away on June 11, 2019, at Wings Home in Allegan.

Janet was born Sept. 15, 1937, to the late Howard and Susie Pierce of Otsego.

She is survived by four children, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her late husband John F. Hettinger and two sons.

There will be a memorial service at 313 Depot Street in Gobles on June 29, from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with an open house immediately following.
