Kathryn A. Lowman, 90

Kathryn A. Lowman, 90, of Allegan.
"You know," she'd say, "when someone is sick in here, well, I go pray with them." She would go on to add that often her fellow residents at the Allegan County Medical Care Community would pass away and sometimes, well, would you believe they got better?  And on the evening of Jan. 18, 2017, Kathryn Ann (Bolhuis) Lowman finally had the opportunity to get better after a long and hard-fought battle with dementia. She was surrounded by her loving family. Kathryn was born on July 24, 1926, to Daniel and Anna Catherine Bolhuis of the Netherlands. She married James (John) Lowman in 1944 and together they raised four children.
Kathryn is survived by her children, Kathy and the Rev. Larry Goodrich, David and Cindy Lowman, Frankie and Mitch Marcell, and her daughter-in-law Cheryl Lowman.   But as I'm sure we all know, her 10 grandchildren, 18.33 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren were her favorites. She is also survived by a brother, Enno Bolhuis.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. James John; son, the Rev. James J.; her parents, Daniel and Anna Catherine; her brothers, Lawrence, Harm, Henry, John and Sabo; and her sisters, Anna, Trina, Fredrica, Gertrude and Grace.
Kathryn was a mother, a gracious pastor's wife and beloved Sunday school teacher for the best years of her life, serving at a number of churches throughout Michigan.  Kathryn was ridiculously skilled at garage-saleing and baking pineapple upside-down cakes, but less so at driving.
The immediate family will gather for a service Friday afternoon, Jan. 20 at 3:30 p.m. at Miner Cemetery in Watson Township. A celebration of Kathryn's life will be scheduled at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to Kathryn's granddaughter Lydia's upcoming missions work in Thailand at https://grouprev.com/tjs2017lydiamarcell#.WF3-TJcsNKI.  The family wishes to specifically acknowledge the staff at the Perrigo Memory Care Center at ACMCC for the incredible care and love shown to Kathryn.
Kathryn's favorite verse is Proverbs 31:10: "Who can find a virtuous woman?  For her price is far above rubies."

Years later in 1977, she relocated to Douglas and established the restaurant that many grew to know and love, the Kalico Kitchen. Catherine resided in Douglas for the following 40 years, raising her family, building a business, and becoming a concrete part of her community.
Throughout life, she strived to be a positive stepping stone for those around her and to provide as much as possible for those that found themselves in need. Her love of travel brought her through nearly all 50 states and later landed her in Arizona, where she lived out her final days.

Catherine will be laid to rest in Ganges at Taylor Cemetery. A celebration of her life is still to be determined at a later date.
