James Earl Childs, 81

James Earl Childs, 81, died Feb. 14, 2019, in Wilmington, Del.

As the old Chinese proverb goes:

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.

Teach a man how to teach another man how to fish and you can feed the world.

Jim certainly did his part to teaching us all how to be better fisherman, along with advice for all life had to offer, making us all better individuals.

Jim was born in Grand Rapids and moved to Fort Pierce, Fla., shortly after retiring from AMFCO in Allegan, and then on to Wilmington, Del., shortly after the passing of his loving wife of 56 years, Pat Childs in March of 2013.

Jim loved the outdoors where he spent much of his time with his family; enjoying the events the different seasons had to offer, with a true love for gardening, fishing and hunting.

The children of Jim and Pat will always have fond memories of Christmas at our house with the Childs family and all of the in-laws; Summers spent at Lake Cecilia; and last of all, deer hunting season, which was like a national holiday. All of these life events will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Jim, we will certainly miss you, but know that our Heavenly Father has called you home.

Dolores “Tike” Marietta (Carruthers) Pulver, 86, of Otsego passed away at home on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019.

She was born Nov. 29, 1932, in Plainwell to John “Babe” and Winona (Hawkins) Carruthers. She graduated from Otsego High School in June 1950 and the American Beauty Academy in July 1963. She worked at Fashion Flair Beauty Salon for many years before opening Dee’s Chop Shop until she retired in November 2018.

She was united in marriage to Robert E. “Brute” Pulver on Dec. 15, 1950. They had five children. She was very active in her neighborhood and community.

She organized and held an annual Halloween party complete with trick or treating for 33 years at her home. She was the president of the Pine Creek Social Club.

Dolores loved to bake and enjoyed giving her homemade banana bread with chocolate chips to many recipients over the years, often delivered while still warm from the oven.

She was involved in music all her life. She directed a junior choir at the Otsego United Methodist Church for years, sang in the chancel choirs at the Otsego Church of God and at the Congregational Church downtown Kalamazoo. She was also active in the adult choir and played the organ and piano along with the dulcimer.

She was a born again Christian and a believer and was not afraid to share her faith and belief with anyone. She would never hesitate to stop and have prayer with anyone, anywhere. Dolores had heard a story about the dates of one’s life. The date you are born and the date you die. She was more focused on the part of the story that asks you—what did you do with your dash in between those dates? Those are the ones that count.

She was also about hugging those closest to you, and letting them know how much they mean to you. So, how is your dash?

Surviving are her children, Penny Kay (Lark) Baker of Otsego, Craig (Pam) Pulver of Kalamazoo, Michele Pulver of Otsego and Dixon (Karena) Pulver of Kalamazoo; daughter-in-law Barbara Pulver of Kalamazoo; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren with another due soon; one great-great-grandchild; brother Richard (Mary) Carruthers; sister Lana (Joseph) Langone; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert on July 18, 2000; son Mark Pulver; grandchildren, Mia Spalvieri Baker and Seth Browning; and her sister Marcia Walters in 2019.

Friends may meet with Dolores’ family from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. A celebration of life service will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating.

Lois Frances Starring Polezoes, 87, of Brunswick, Ga., peacefully passed away at home on Dec. 17, 2018, surrounded by those who loved her.

She was born to the late Linus and Myrtle Starring on Feb. 22, 1931, in Allegan. Lois graduated from Allegan High School in 1948 and went on to nurses training at Garfield Park Hospital in Chicago, graduating in 1951. She spent the following 50 years as a registered nurse before retiring in Jupiter, Fla.

She is survived by former husband of 30 years, James Polezoes and they resided in Ganges. She later divorced and continued to live in Granges for a few years before moving to Jupiter, Fla., in 1989, where she worked at the Jupiter Hospital in the ICU ward until her retirement in 1993.

She moved to Brunswick, Ga., with her son James and Michael Hulett in 2007. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer in 2008 and loving care by James and Michael ensued, along with protection and some wonderful spoiling.

Lois was a devoted (almost to a fault) fisher-person. She could out-fish the best of them and won many awards and plaques for her skills until arthritis made it impossible. She then took to growing orchids—lots and lots of orchids. She loved her garden. It was her peace on earth.

She passed those skills to her son, James and dear friend, Julie Peoples. When she moved to Brunswick the orchids were phased out due to the cold climate, but she also loved to watch and feed the birds while sitting on the front porch with her faithful dog Sadie on her lap.

In 2016, she began traveling with Jim and Michael, helping sell CDs (and acting as referee between the boys) and attracting lots of adoration because of her personality.

Everywhere Lois went, people were attracted to her like a magnet—always wanting to give her a hug or a kiss on the forehead. She was loved by all.

A memorial service will be Saturday, Feb. 23, at 3 p.m. at Christ Church Frederica, 6329 Frederica Road, Saint Simons Island, GA 31522. There will also be a streaming video of her service.

Susan Elizabeth Huguelet, 85

Susan Elizabeth Huguelet, 85, received her angel wings on March 2, 2019. This amazing woman will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandma, sibling and friend by all who knew her.

Sue was born Aug. 8, 1933, the second child of eight children born to Theodore and Josephine Lange in Allegan. Throughout her childhood, Sue treasured the time spent with her five sisters and two brothers as well as her grandparents. She was very family oriented and the pride and love she took in that was undeniable.

Mom and Dad’s porch, the fairgrounds, Little John Lake, and reminiscing about many memories made at “Grandma on the Hill’s” house cherished.

Sue was always an advocate for education, graduating from Michigan State University along with the love of her life, Joseph Edward Huguelet II – “Cork.” The two wed on Aug. 14, 1955, and eventually moved to Fargo, N.D. with their three small children. Here they settled and quickly developed many close friendships with neighbors and colleagues that became like family to her.

She was a proud founding member of the “Ladies of Lunch” group for over 50 years, always sharing stories of their adventurous and fun times together. Volunteering at the Opportunity School in Fargo for many years and teaching second grade for 15 years in the Fargo Public School system, Sue retired from teaching from Jefferson Elementary in 2001.

Even though retired, Sue continued her volunteer efforts as she loved helping others. In 2009, Sue was humbled, being recognized by the YWCA as the “Volunteer Service Woman of the Year” for her work with the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center.

She was fun loving, smiley and at times “sassy” with a twinkle in her eye. Everyone who knew her liked her.

Sue was an independent and resilient woman; having lost her husband at a young age in 1977, her faith was undeterred and her commitment to the church unwavering. Because of her convictions, she stayed strong for her kids and years later, her pride and joy became focusing her time on her grandchildren—she was their Number One Fan.

Whether watching her grandchildren’s sporting events, taking family vacations together or spending every summer weekend at Island Lake, she lived for these moments and even in her final days stated, “Everyone I love is here, why would I want to go anywhere?”

Sue was preceded in death by her husband Cork; her parents; siblings, Grace Ann Richardson, Barb Washburn, Mary Joan Lange and Ted Lange; along with her brother-in-law and sisters-in-law; Gerald Richardson, Wanda Lange and Sue Lange–all of Michigan.

Sue is survived by her three children; Joe (Samantha) Huguelet of Brainerd, Minn., Jeff (Kerry Jo) Huguelet of Fargo, N.D., and Jamie (Jay) Karlovich of Excelsior, Minn.; and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Sara (Erick) Galt – Gabriella and Gisele, Fargo, N.D., Josh Huguelet of Fargo, N.D., Brittany (Gilbert) Ortega of Tucson, Ariz., Luke Karlovich of Louisville, Colo.; Joey Huguelet of Brainerd, Minn. and Justine Grover — Mila of Minneapolis, Minn.

Sue is also survived by one brother, two sisters, and one brother-in-law: Thomas Lange of Allegan; Kathy Lange of Vicksburg; and Gretchen and Ron Wedge of Allegan; and many cherished and loved nieces and nephews.

While we will miss her greatly, we are comforted knowing she was welcomed into Heaven, greeted by a husband who has waited for so long to hug her again, along with a long list of others that were anxiously waiting right behind him.

Her funeral service will be Saturday, March 9, at Gethsemane Episcopal Cathedral in Fargo. Visitation will start at 3 p.m. and the memorial service will begin at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to an Alzheimer’s foundation or a youth educational program would be appreciated.

Arrangements are by Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, N.D.
