Ralph was born March 10, 1947, in Plainwell, the son of Lloyd and Olive (Knapp) Earl. On May, 19, 2001, he married his love, Laurie (Miller) Grougan-Earl who survives.

Ralph was known as being a kind and gentle man, who was devoted to helping others. Following in the footsteps of his father, Ralph served in the Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Boxer LPH-4 as well as stateside, before returning to Michigan to serve his community. Ralph was very proud of the three generations of United States Navy men in his family: his father Lloyd, himself, and his son Joe Earl.

He was proud of his time spent serving his community, and openly showed his admiration for the police and fire and rescue teams.

He enjoyed reading and learning about world history and past wars.  Alongside his studies, he enjoyed historical documentaries and classic movies; his favorite actor was John Wayne. He also enjoyed the more recent Marvel hero-type movies!

Most of Ralph’s family live downstate or out of state, but anytime they could get together, call, or Facebook each other, they did.

Ralph loved and was proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  Ralph also loved visiting his father and mother-in-law, Don and Jenny Miller in Kalkaska County, many times visiting the in-laws along with their grown and married (5) Miller daughters and their families and children.

Major David Lee Oetman (USAF, retired) completed his final mission June 22, 2018, as he passed away at home in Crestview, Fla., surrounded by his family (devoted wife Erika Oetman, sons Kyle Oetman, Josh Oetman, Patrick Oetman, Matt Goodman, and daughter Tori Goodman). Dave handled a long battle with cancer the same way that he lived—with quiet strength and dignity.

Dave was born Sept. 19, 1956. He grew up on a farm in Watson Township with parents Jerry and Illene Oetman, and siblings Debi (Chris) Kraft, Mike (Donna) Oetman, Kathy (Jon) Rockwood, and Joni (John) VanNieuwenhuyzen, all of whom survive.

His strong work ethic began there on the farm, with Dave handling all his chores with a keen sense of responsibility, from milking cows to baling hay, to raising 4-H award winning pumpkins.

Dave’s leadership qualities were evident early on, as he was an active participant in extra-curricular activities at Martin High School, where he graduated in 1974. He was elected Senior Class president and was “captain” for many of the sports teams on which he excelled. Dave attended Adrian College and WMU, earning a degree in math education.

His distinguished military career spanned over 20 years, five states, and seven USAF bases. He served with honor as a B52 Navigator and Bombardier, a Combat Student Training Instructor, and a Strategic Command Officer, eventually earning the rank of Major before retiring form Langley AFB in 2002. He continued to be employed as a government contractor until recently at Eglin AFB in Florida.

Dave was devoted to his family, and service to his country and his church were his other top priorities. He married Erika Goodman on Oct. 27, 2007. His strong Christian faith led him to Crosspoint Methodist Church, where he enjoyed helping with children’s ministries and missions.

Dave enjoyed woodworking, running, fishing, golf and nearly all sports. He especially looked forward to an annual fishing trip to the Two-Hearted River in Michigan’s U.P.  He took great pride in everything he did, and Dave was definitely a source of pride to his family and friends.

Funeral services were June 29 in Florida. The family is hosting a celebration of David’s life on Saturday, July 28, at 12 noon at the Otsego VFW. Friends and family are invited to attend to share memories of Dave, followed by refreshments.

Edmund “Ted” Littell, 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, July 14, 2018, under the care of Hospice in Holland.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Tomlinson Littell; two sons, Todd Littell of Brookville, Fla., and Phil Littell of Holland; and two grandsons, Leland and Gabriel Littell of Grand Rapids.

Ted was born March 2, 1931, in Evanston, Ill., where he lived until moving to New Jersey in 1939. He spent the majority of his youth growing up in Mountain Lakes, N.J. and eventually attended the Millersburg Military Institute.

After graduating he joined the United States Marine Corps, attended Fairleigh Dickenson and Wabash College and then returned again to Mountain Lakes before leaving for a job opportunity in California. While on his journey West he stopped off to visit some friends of his family in Chicago where he met his bride, Mary Tomlinson, of 58 years. The newly married couple took up residence in Wilmette, Ill., a Chicago suburb.

It wasn’t too long before Ted was hired by Deluxe Check Printers and transferred to Plymouth. They enjoyed this friendly little town for a short period of time but Ted was offered another opportunity he could not refuse which was a position in New York City with The Wall Street Journal.

The decision was made and they were off to the East Coast for a new adventure. The Wall Street Journal opened up new opportunities of travel and places to live for the years ahead. They moved to Miami, and then a transfer to the London office in the United Kingdom.

Eventually the family settled back in the states and returned to Mountain Lakes. Ted was once again based in the New York office.

In 1979, Ted decided to leave the East Coast and relocate his family to Holland, as both he and Mary had spent summers in Leland and Saugatuck.

That same year, Ted started his own printing company (Plaza Printing), which he ran until he retired in 2002.

Ted was known by many as a hard-working, determined businessman who was very focused on building his company. He was a caring person with a good sense of humor and was always willing to help those in need. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time at home when he wasn’t working in his office.

He loved listening to his collection of classical music, enjoyed traveling, boating and spending time in Leland.

Ted often mentioned that he felt very fortunate to have had the experience of growing up in Mountain Lakes but in his latter years often reflected on how much he grew to love the beauty of the Michigan shoreline.

Ted will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, July 25, at 4 p.m. at Dykstra Funeral Home, Northwood Chapel, 295 Douglas Ave., in Holland. A one-hour visitation will take place prior to the service starting at 3 p.m. For more information, please visit www.dykstrafuneralhome.com

Betty Lou Hewitt (Gable), 87, of Allegan, Aug. 22, 1930 – July 19, 2018.

Isaiah 41:13 For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not: I will help thee.

That is what He did on July 19, 2018, at Allegan County Medical Care Community where she was a resident for the last two years. She loved everyone there and was known for her hugs. She didn’t care if you knew her or not you were going to get a hug.

Betty peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior. She had attended Chicora Country Chapel as well as most recently Merson Church.

Born Aug. 22, 1930, the daughter of Thomas and Vida (Greeno) Gable in Chicago, Ill., Betty married Gordon Kolhoff in 1947. They were blessed with two daughters. She later married Richard Hewitt.

Betty had many jobs in her life including working at Perrigo, Allegan Paper Products, Dog Life, and General Electric to name a few. She and Richard also owned and operated the Card Room in Allegan for a number of years.

She loved hunting and fishing and would never pass up a fish fry. She looked forward to Thanksgiving with all the kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Never did she have turkey, it was always goose and duck. At Easter she would always hide eggs outside with nickels taped to them for the great-grandkids to find; that is, except the year the dog found several of them first. This was always followed by a big breakfast for all.

She was a very high-spirited woman and when you met her you never forgot her. Always ready to take care of others. If you had a cold you could be sure she was going to show up with chicken soup and tell you to drink sugar water with onion soaked in it.

Betty loved her family and everyone of them was special to her. She leaves behind her daughters Judy (Ted) Hillman and Marleah (Richard) Simons. Her grandchildren, Cari (Russ) Strickfaden of Allegan and Ted (Ashley) Hillman of Scottsbluff, Neb., Michelle (Roger) Martin of Fennville and Windy (Rick) Robinson of Hamilton. She also was blessed with the two lovely girls that Ashley brought to her family, Brooke Marghiem and Carlie Marghiem. Betty was looking forward to her first great-great-grandchild in August. Betty had one brother-in-law Bruce Kolhoff and a sister-in-law Eleanor Kolhoff. She also had two very special nephew’s David (Barb) Kolhoff and Donald (Linda) Morey, along with many other nieces and nephews that she held dear.

She was proceeded in death by her father and mother; both husbands, Gordon Kolhoff and Richard Hewitt; her five siblings, sisters Marion Schmall, Barbara Eberhard, Emma Christman and Joan Harris, and brother Thomas Jr.

Maxine J. (House) Buist, 88, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018. Maxine was born on June 1, 1930, to her adoring parents, Gordon and Lorraine House in Grand Rapids.

While enrolled at Grand Rapids Junior College, Maxine met the love of her life, Jack D. Buist Sr. Maxine and Jack were married on June 29, 1951. In 1954, Jack took a teaching job in Allegan, which they called home for the remainder of their lives.

After the kids were in school, Maxine started her career at the Allegan Public Schools as an elementary librarian at both Dawson and West Ward. She found a great deal of joy in working with the students, and as evidenced by the correspondence through the years, Maxine was well loved by the kids.

Maxine loved decorating for every holiday. She was especially known for her Christmas decor and her elaborate Santa collection. She loved to entertain and was a gracious hostess.

Maxine was the most loving and devoted mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend. She had many lifelong friendships that she cherished deeply. She was, indeed, our “Dear Heart.”

Maxine leaves her adoring children, Greg and Dawn Buist, Susan Buist, Judy and Joel Grams and Jack Buist Jr. (Tina Tuller); three grandchildren, Meredith Buist, Curtis and Dawn Channells and Jason Gant; five great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; her brother Thomas House; maternal aunt Valerie Knapp; several nieces, nephews, cousins and dearly loved lifelong friends.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. A memorial service will immediately follow at 12 noon, with Pastor Roger Bird officiating.
