Phyllis Carol Schornagel, 93, of New Richmond died in March while visiting with family in Illinois.

Phyllis lived fully and well. She was a person of indomitable will and strength, the pillar of our family, with unflagging energy matched by her infectious joy of living, sense of humor, and generosity. She was always ready take new challenges, ready to help friends and family through the tough times, to laugh and make us laugh.

Her energy and perseverance inspired us, her children, grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, to follow our dreams and to make the world a better place. Her family and friends meant the world to her and she meant the world to us.

Phyllis believed in the values of education, hard work and continuous self-improvement. A life-long learner, she attended Hope College, earned a bachelor’s degree at North Park College, attended Chicago’s Kent Law School, and took community college courses in computer science, metallurgy, and solar engineering.

She earned her master’s in Business Administration at Grand Valley State University at age 73 and worked as a CPA well into her 80s. At every phase of her career, Phyllis was a pioneer, breaking employment gender barriers and championing women’s rights in every job she held.

In both work and play, Phyllis was an adventurer. She loved road trips in her brightly colored sports car, sailing on Lake Michigan on her 12-foot sailboat, riding her Honda 50, and even tried sky-diving.

Phyllis will be interred at the New Richmond Cemetery on Saturday, April 28, at 1 p.m., followed by a celebration of her life at her home with family, friends, and neighbors in the afternoon.

In the meantime, we thank all of you for the love and friendship you gave her, and the laughter you brought to her life.

Phyllis was an avid reader all her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Fennville District Library in her name would be greatly appreciated.

Angie J. VanSlambrouck

June 19, 1977—April 17, 2018

You fell in love the minute you met Angie with her sparkling eyes, crazy laugh and sense of humor. She gave us miles of smiles. She was one of a kind.

Her hair ... buns, braids, ponytails or, uh-oh, it’s down! (Carissa:) She wore black, except for her Red Wings gear. She made us laugh, cry and think outside the box.

If you mentioned her name, you heard “Angie? I love her.” We all do, we always will. Her radiant self will always be missed.

Angie graduated with honors from Fennville High School and attended GVSU where she consistently made the Deans List.

Known as a Rock Star in the hospitality industry, she worked many years at Wally’s in Saugatuck and was most recently happily employed at the Pullman Tavern.

Angie passed away unexpectedly in her sleep at her father’s home near Hutchins Lake.

She is survived by her mother Jeannie (Duff) VanSlambrouck; father Clay VanSlambrouck; step-mother Mari Ellen; step-sisters Tammy and Debby; brother Allie and chosen sister Kate Kingstad; along with several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was the only child of Jean and Clay.

We need to emulate her passion and make this world a better place in her honor. If you look up you will see her, jetting around, telling us to smile laugh and love each other. Love ’n Light Ang!

Some people come into our lives and quickly go

Some people move our souls to dance.

They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom

And make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon.

Some people stay in our lives a while, leave footprints on our hearts,

And we are never, ever the same.

This is you Angie Girl !

An epic Celebration of Life will be Sunday, June 10, from 1 to 5 p.m., at 2366 Lakeshore Dr., Fennville MI 49408 (Harringtons).

Donna Marcy Peel, 68

Our family became a lot smaller on April 26, 2018, when we lost Donna Marcy Peel. Donna was a very large presence in the life of the Saugatuck Douglas community and her family.

She was born Sept. 6, 1949, the first of four children. She moved to Saugatuck in the late seventies and became an integral part of the community, working at the Sewer and Water, City of Saugatuck, and most recently as the owner of the Waypoint restaurant in early 2008.

The Waypoint became a local icon where people were comfortable coming alone because there was always room at the community table. Patrons quickly became friends. Donna loved people. She loved talking with them. Most of all she loved helping them.

The cliché “generous to a fault” was the only way she knew to live her life. Donna loved horses and animals of all types. She loved fishing with Mike Peel, the love of her life whom she married Oct. 02, 2001.

Unfortunately, Donna was preceded in death by her sister Christine Aalderink in 1990; as well as her father Roger Marcy in 2015; and her husband Michael Peel in 2016.

Donna is survived by her two sons, John and Ryan (Amanda) Sullivan; her mother Pat Marcy; her brothers, Steve (Brenda) and Roger (Laurie) Marcy; two cousins, four nieces, one nephew and her three step-children.

Donna loved family above all else. She embraced Mike’s children as though they were her own and stayed in contact with them after he passed. The greatest joys of her life were her four grandchildren whom she loved way beyond the moon and back.

A celebration of Donna’s life is being planned and will be at a later date.

Sallie Erlandson, 81, of Douglas passed away peacefully at Country Home Care AKA “Wilma’s Place” on May 18, 2018.

Sallie was born June 25, 1936, to William and Theodora Klug in Morgantown, W.Va. As a young lass, the family moved to Gary, Ind., where Sallie acted as second mother to her brothers William and Michael.

In her early 20s she met her future husband, Dave Erlandson. The two were married and bought the White House in Saugatuck, now known as Good Goods. There, they rented rooms and started their family. As the Saugatuck scene grew into a “party town” they looked for a home in Douglas and there they settled in for many years.

Sallie and Dave raised their family and welcomed many critters and extra kids into their life. She worked as a secretary at SPS and DES and later got her degree in Social Work from Grand Valley State. As a social worker, she was an advocate for children in the Ottawa County 0-5 preventative abuse program, and later she worked at Catholic Social Services in Grand Rapids.

Sallie was the first woman on the Douglas Village Council and she also worked on the committee to build the pavilion at Wicks park, always making time for others.

Later in life she enjoyed yard saleing with her good friend Sue Lark. They were a force to be reckoned with! Also, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends at one of her favorite places, “Beach Haven,” the family cottage in Elberta. She had a soft spot in her heart for her grandkids, Nora, Kay and Luke who knew her as “Grammy” or “Candy Gram.”

Some people will remember her for her good council during tough times. Some may remember her for her sharp wit. She lived life on her terms, with no apologies and no regrets.

Sallie was preceded in death by an infant daughter Aimee.

She is survived by her children Douglas Erlandson, Mark Erlandson, Molly Erlandson and Tim (Brandy) Erlandson. Also, she is survived by her brothers William (Kathy) Klug of New Jersey and Michael (Jane) Klug of Florida; and her former husband, best friend, and strongest supporter, Dave Erlandson.

The family would like to thank Wilma and Gary Yates for their love and tender care at the end of Sallie’s life. Sallie’s ashes will be laid to rest in the Saugatuck Township Cemetery next to her daughter Aimee. A private memorial service will take place later this summer.

Donations can be made in her name for the proposed new Saugatuck-Douglas District Library building, P.O. Box 789, Douglas, MI 49406.
