Carolyn Clark, 76

Carolyn Sue Furst Clark, age 76, died on Friday, Oct. 2, 2020. The oldest child of Mrs. Caroline Edith and Dr. Harold D. Furst, she was born in Evanston, Ill., on Jan. 14, 1944. 

She was raised in Bremen, Ind., and retired to Douglas, following 30 years in Madison, Ind. She is survived by her husband Dr. James Michael Clark originally from Forest Park, Ill., and brothers: Brian and Rhonda Furst (Travis and David) and Steven Furst. 

Carolyn received both Baccalaureate and Masters degrees at Indiana University-Bloomington. She also enjoyed language studies at the University of the Americas, Mexico, and University of Dijon, France where she passed the “Niveau Deux” exams.

She was affiliated with Chi Omega as vice president, president, chapter adviser and corporation board member. She also worked to install a Chi Omega chapter at Hanover College, Indiana. While in graduate school, she was chosen for membership in Pi Lambda Theta, an Honorary Society in the School of Education.

She served as Assistant to the Dean at IU, Assoc., Dean of Students at Hanover College, and in administration at Madison Chemical Co.

Always an advocate for young women, she served two terms as a corporation board member for Girls’, Inc. and received the Girls’ Club of America national award of Advocacy for Young Women. She was in PEO, a philanthropic education organization for women, for over 30 years.

Hobbies included competition ballroom dance and fine needlework. She also enjoyed spending summers at the family home in Fife Keith, Scotland. Locally she was a member of the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society and the Saugatuck Woman’s Club.

Cremation will take place. Memorial contributions may be given to Girls, Inc. in Madison, Ind., Harbor Humane Society in West Olive  or Wishbone Animal Rescue in Douglas. Arrangements are by Dykstra Funeral Homes-Saugatuck Chapel.
