Laura Marie MacDonald of Grand Rapids passed away on June 19, 2020. Laura, a resident at Samaritas Senior Living of Grand Rapids, died from a combination of old age, the COVID virus and dementia.
Laura was born on Aug. 19, 1924, to Carl and Freida Sydow in Brutus, Mich.
She was the oldest of 10 children and attended the Aire School and Pellston Public Schools. She worked as a nanny for the Harbor Springs Harbor Master and later as a telegraph operator during World War II.
On Dec. 29, 1948, she married Edward F. MacDonald at St. Margaret’s parish in Otsego. They had three children: John (Ginny) MacDonald of Birmingham, Ala., Ronald (Mari) MacDonald of Estes Park, Colo., and Michael (Pam) MacDonald of Grand Rapids.
Her husband passed away on June 30, 1982.
Laura is survived by two siblings Carl (Marcia) Sydow and Elsie Sydow and her three grandchildren, Matthew, Nicholas and Griffin.
Laura loved quilting, her grandchildren, baking, gardening and traveling with her friends. She was a dedicated Cub Scout Den leader for many years. When her children grew up, she worked as the office manager for Curtis Trailer Sales.
Her funeral services will be for family only.
The family requests that any contributions be made to Hospice of Michigan or The Alzheimer’s Association.
