On May 21, 2019, Marcus Otis (Marc) Waugh passed peacefully in his apartment at Porter Hills Village in Grand Rapids.

Born Dec. 15, 1932, the only son of Ruth E. and Lloyd H. Waugh, Marc was a lifelong resident of Saugatuck until the passing of his wife Lynn Nadine Waugh (Resignol) on Nov. 9, 2009. They were married 49 years and resided at 346 Griffith St., from 1964 until Lynn’s death.

Marc was born in the Saugatuck-Douglas hospital that now houses the Kirby hotel and restaurant. Marc attended Saugatuck Public Schools and was a member of the Graduating Class of 1951. He attended Western Michigan University for two years before being inducted into the United States Army in January 1954.

Beginning in 1956, Marc ran and operated Culligan Water Conditioning and was affectionately known as “the Culligan Man,” which resulted in many a prank call to the home where he and Lynn maintained their office. Marc and Lynn successfully ran the business until their retirement in May 1997.

Marc was active in the community serving as a member of the Saugatuck Volunteer Fire Department, the Saugatuck Lions Club and on the Saugatuck Township Board of Trustees.

Marc was an avid sportsman, spending many a weekend and holiday fishing and hunting in northern Michigan…annual deer camp in Fife Lake, Michigan with an assortment of Saugatuck luminaries (Harry Newnham and Herm Herner to name just two), frequent trips to Baldwin and parts nearby to fly fish on the Baldwin and Pere Marquette rivers (which he frequented as a young man with his father), and an annual ducking hunting float down the Rabbit River with his long time pal Jack Olson.

Following Lynn’s death, Marc resided at Porter Hills Village. He enjoyed weekly dinners and long weekend drives with son Steve, and in the summer months many visits to 5/3 Ballpark to enjoy the Whitecaps and a cold Bud Light.

Marc was proceeded in death by his mother Ruth Bundy Waugh and his father Lloyd Hall Waugh. Ruth is remembered for her service as the Kindergarten teacher in Saugatuck Public Schools from 1928 until her retirement in 1966. Lloyd is remembered as “Doc Waugh,” having served as Superintendent of Saugatuck Public Schools from 1928 until his passing in 1955.

Marc is survived by his son Steven Marc Waugh of Holland; two grandchildren, Ellen Marie Waugh of Chicago, Ill., and Patrick Lloyd Waugh of Grand Rapids; and cousin Van Waugh and his wife Lynn Waugh (Van Pelt) of Owosso.

The family wishes to thank the many nurses and staff at Porter Hills Village for the many years of kind care they provided to Marc.

Details concerning the celebration of Marc’s life will be announced at a later date. For more information, please visit dykstrafuneralhome.com.
