Timothy J. Spooner, 71

Timothy J. Spooner, 71, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at Aiken Regional Medical Center, Aiken, S.C.

He graduated from Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, N.Y. During his senior year in high school, he appeared in a summer stock performance of J.B. at the Cape Playhouse on Cape Cod.

Tim graduated from the University of Denver and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. In his early twenties, he was the delegate for El Pasco County to the Colorado Republican Party state convention. He was in the healthcare field for 32 years and at the time of his retirement was a senior vice-president of Aetna, Inc.

Two of his lifelong passions were dedicated to the arts and to community involvement. In Toledo, Ohio, Tim was involved for a number of years with the Old West End Festival, in that city’s historic Victorian district.

In Saugatuck, he was a member of the Saugatuck Historic District Commission, was the founding donor to the Mason Street Warehouse Theater and a member of its board of directors.

In the city of his final residence, Aiken, S.C., Tim was a member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, where he was involved its soup kitchen, and was a member of the board of trustees of Joye in Aiken.

Tim’s life was rewarding because he genuinely enjoyed the company of old and new friends and that of family members, especially his grandchildren.

Mr. Spooner is survived by his husband and companion of 28 years, Steven E. Masterson of Aiken, S.C.; daughter, Beth Shiflett and her husband, Dennis, of Alexandria, Va.; Christy Martinez of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren Mollie and Katie Shiflett, Gabriel and Olivia Martinez; brother Jack Spooner of Bruceton Mills, W. Va.

A memorial service will be Saturday, June 9, at 10 a.m. at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, 125 Pendleton St. SW, Aiken, SC 29801.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Joye in Aiken, P.O.  Box 5538, Aiken, S.C. 29804 or to FOTAS (Friends of the Animal Shelter), P.O. Box 2207, Aiken, S.C. 29802.

May the memory of his dedication to community, thoughtfulness of others and his deep-rooted kindness be long remembered.
